Bee Turcotte / Success In The Age Of Corona

Bee is a business mentor & social media strategist that empowers driven entrepreneurs and business owners through goal implementation & organization techniques.

Five years ago, I was moving into my first apartment after college and getting ready to start a job at a prestigious accounting firm in a big city. It was the success I had worked for my whole life and I was ready to kick ass.

Once I started my independent life and got into a routine, I found my emotional state starting to change from mostly happy and outgoing to anxious and introverted. I was living the life that I dreamed, working the job I had fought for and partying every weekend with my new co-workers. But, why wasn’t I happy or fulfilled?

Fast forward to today, I’ve been (unexpectedly) unemployed for seven months, attempting to find a full-time job and build a career. So, I found myself asking questions like, “Does this make me a failure?”, “Someone that doesn’t have a sense of direction or ambition?”. Nope! In fact – it is quite the contrary. Asking myself those questions and diving into the complicated answers started to get my brain thinking of all the possibilities that laid before me. In the five years I spent in the corporate industry I learned a few things about myself. For one, I require at least 8 hours of sleep to function and I’m more productive during the morning hours.I also learned how to keep myself on a schedule. It’s not much, but it’s enough to keep my mind focused and my skills developing. I also realized that this was the first time since I was 13 year’s old that I haven’t been working at least one job!

So instead of wallowing in self-pity, I took a different route.I started to channel my energy into things that made the weight in my chest evaporate a little more each day. It started with learning how to make bread from scratch, then to learning how to garden, and finally one day unfolded into my fifth business endeavor – Busy B Social!

What I have learned from all of this is that the only constant we have in life is the unexpected and it’s something that’s really hard to accept. So how can we accept this without giving up hope of some semblance of normalcy? With COVID still in full swing in parts of our country, if you can wake up and be healthy that’s success in my book. But really, these days people have started to shift their mindset from “money = success” to “happiness=success” which is something this world has needed for a long while.

By shifting your focus from one to the other, you allow yourself to be comfortable with where you’re at and also focus on what makes you feel good. Naturally this increases the flow of dopamine in your brain and makes you feel better overall and develop a more positive outlook. Now, I’m not saying this comes easily. But chipping away at it a little bit everyday can really make a difference.

My message to anyone reading is: keep going, keep dreaming and please don’t let the world get you down. You can do this and you’ve got the whole world behind you to watch you succeed – whatever that means to you.
